How long should I plan for a visit to the gardens?
Many people ask us how long it takes to see the garden, so we’ve adapted our list from one used by our good friend Tony Avent of Plant Delights Nursery in North Carolina.
- Casual visitor looking for a nice place to walk around and enjoy pretty things; 45-60 minutes
- Moderate home gardener wishing to check out the gardens; 1-3 hours
- Avid gardener, landscape architect, amateur photographer or academic egg head; 4-8 hours;
- Serious plant dweeb looking to thoroughly investigate each and every plant and correct the typos on our plant labels; 2-5 days
- For those who think they need more time in the garden, we can suggest several good therapists. Or, you can volunteer full-time in the garden!
Call (502) 241-4788 for group rates and tours. Tour guides can usually be arranged for groups of 10 or more paying visitors or members. Please provide at least a 2-week lead time for scheduling of tour guides.
Volunteering at Yew Dell
Volunteers make up an essential part of what makes Yew Dell run. Volunteers help with every aspect of Yew Dell’s daily activities from garden work to events, office support to classes. In addition, volunteering is a great way to learn. Volunteers enjoy special benefits including our annual volunteer celebration and awards, special training classes available only to volunteers, and much more. Some of Yew Dell’s volunteer slots have even become highly competitive affairs – the annual Plant Sale and Garden Market, staffing green-industry trade shows (that aren’t open to the public!), and more.
No experience is needed. We’ll provide all the training necessary! Whether you are a gardener, painter, mechanic, accountant or mountain climber, we’ll find a way to match your talents with a Yew Dell project.
To inquire about Yew Dell’s volunteer program, email Bonnie Heaton or call the office at 241-4788.
2nd Saturday Work Days!
Monthly volunteer work days are held the 2nd Saturday of each month, March through November. Each month a group of enthusiastic volunteers and staff tackle some project or projects on the grounds from gardening to event set up, nursery work and more. And each Saturday event starts with a 5-10 minute mini course on some seasonally appropriate garden topic.
There is a charge for all professional photography including the following:
- Wedding/Engagement Photos
- Professional Portraits
- Graduation Portraits
- Commercial Photography
Please contact us for rates and availability.
Amateur photographers, contact us to discuss limitations on use of photos taken at Yew Dell.
